Las Palmas gives it their all, but Rayo takes the points from Gran Canaria (0-1)
It wasn’t meant to be. UD Las Palmas suffered another home defeat, this time against Rayo Vallecano by the narrowest of margins (0-1). The Yellows gave their all in the match, but the only goal came from Álvaro García in the second half.
UD Las Palmas had their chances, even to take the lead, but the local attackers’ efforts couldn’t get past goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski (referred to as Batalla here, likely an error or alternate name).
Januzaj’s presence in the playmaking role and Juanma Herzog’s in defense were the main changes in Las Palmas' starting eleven. Coach Diego Martínez waited until the last moment to see if Fabio Silva was fit to return, but the Portuguese striker was once again absent from La Liga action. Wearing street clothes, he watched the game from the stands.
In the opening minutes, Las Palmas couldn’t find their rhythm, and the visitors created the first chance just 4 minutes in. However, Álex Suárez managed to deflect Álvaro García’s shot just enough to prevent a scare.
The Yellows tried to bounce back with organization and grit, growing into the game as the minutes passed. Though Las Palmas’ attacks were few, they were dangerous. In the 22nd minute, Essugo fired a powerful shot from outside the box that narrowly missed the far post. Then in the 28th, McBurnie found space in the area, but his shot was saved low by Batalla.
The match became more balanced at that point, and the crowd rallied behind the team in search of the opening goal. Dangerous situations stayed away from Dinko Horkas’ goal, allowing him a calm first half.
Januzaj orchestrated the game and, linking up with Moleiro, led the Canarian offensive efforts. Two crosses from the Belgian just before halftime could have caused problems for the Rayo defense. The second one unfortunately ended in the goalkeeper’s hands after a poor first touch from McBurnie.
McBurnie was also at the center of the last major action of the first half in the 44th minute. He appealed for a penalty after contact with a defender during a run, but the referee dismissed the claim and booked the striker for simulation.
The second half began with an exchange of chances that didn’t lead to goals. Las Palmas’ opportunity again came through McBurnie, but his weak shot ended up in Batalla’s hands.
Isi gave Las Palmas a scare in the 62nd minute with a powerful shot inside the area, but Horkas reacted well and saved it for a corner. Then, in the 65th minute, the breakthrough came: Isi set up a play that Álvaro García finished successfully to make it 0-1.
The goal was a blow for Las Palmas, but they quickly regained composure and energy. They pressed for an equalizer, creating some dangerous moments. McBurnie nearly scored with a chipped shot off an excellent ball from Moleiro, but it went just over the bar.
The final 20 minutes were a full-on siege from Las Palmas, but the visitors managed to protect their slim lead on a disappointing Friday night.
