Las Palmas were expecting a tough encounter and Pepe Mel’s played to their strengths, scoring their first goal in the 14th minute. A fine ball through by Pedri was turned into the back of the net by Thomas Pekhart. Deportivo de La Coruña came to the Estadio Gran Canaria with a new manager and were intent on pulling themselves back up the league table.

The yellows today wore pink, and tore into Depor’s defence from the kick off. With quick passing moves they created chance after chance. Deportivo showed cracks in their back line and were unable to block the tide of Las Palmas’ attacks down either wing.

UD Las Palmas were in scintillating form, and pieced together a great team move which ended with a cross by Pedri that was headed home by the lanky Czech striker, making the scores 2-0 after 30 minutes. The home side were romping to their fourth consecutive league win and into their first play-off place this season. The whole team were putting in considerable effort, and all outfield players were defending from the front. Half time came with a comfortable 2-0 scoreline and the fans in raptures.

The home side got even better in the second half. Their league form was outstanding and the players were enjoying themselves on the pitch. A Jonathan Viera penalty put his side 3-0 ahead in the 65th minute, and Deportivo were resigned to the fact they were being over-run. Home goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, making his first team debut, pulled off a fine save from a free kick by Aketxe. In the last few minutes Pekhart saw his effort come back off the post. The final whistle came with another fine goal-scoring performance by Las Palmas who are storming up the league, and who now look forward to next week’s trip to the Ramón de Carranza stadium to face league leaders Cádiz CF.
