Las Palmas ends the Andalucía stage with a defeat against Cádiz (2-1)
UD Las Palmas concluded their training camp in Andalusia after Thursday's match against Cádiz (2-1) in Benalup. The island players fell short in the final score, although they demonstrated progress in their gameplay. The match marked the return of Jonathan Viera, as well as several debuts within the team.
The third preseason friendly featured the Uruguayan Jeremia Recoba as a notable addition to Luis García Fernández's starting eleven. The recent signing for the yellows joined the attacking lineup against Cádiz, playing in a position very close to striker Jaime Mata. His first minutes in the friendlies hinted at a player with a clear offensive mindset, probing attacking positions to surprise the defenders.
Recoba was the first threat for UD Las Palmas, with a play down to the end line that failed to find a finisher. Later, he came close with a shot just wide of the post after a deflection by a Cádiz defender.
However, it was Cádiz who scored first in the match. The Andalusians had several opportunities stemming from ball recoveries in the opponent's half. Ocampo tested Dinko Horkas's reflexes twice in a dangerous play when the clock hit the 16th minute. The Croatian goalkeeper also successfully deflected another shot from Ortuño in the 26th minute.
The 1-0 came from a header by forward Roger. The play was not stopped in time, with a cross to the far post, a subsequent assist from Ocampo, and the final shot into an open goal.
Las Palmas quickly bounced back from the setback. In addition to Recoba's earlier chance, the islanders equalized just at the half-hour mark. The 1-1 was scored by Mika Mármol, who executed a delicate chip over goalkeeper Aznar. The left-footed defender had joined the attack and capitalized perfectly on a poor defensive decision by the Andalusians. The score remained 1-1 at halftime, with growing confidence among UD Las Palmas players.
In the second half, both teams gradually substituted their starting eleven. The match remained lively, with Las Palmas enjoying a great chance through Sory Kaba, whose low left-footed shot was saved at the last moment by goalkeeper Fernando.
Cádiz also had two opportunities. The first was blocked by Killane, and the last, in the final minutes, ended with the 2-1 scored by David García after a set-piece play.
