Jonathan Viera stated before the match against Málaga CF that he expects "a tough and very close tie. Málaga has had a very good season, with young players." "We are going to have to bring the game to our ground if we want to advance. Sunday's game is going to be fundamental," he added.
These were some of his statements:
"I love these weeks, they are my favorite of the whole season. I am very excited, as if it were the first one, and I am really looking forward to Sunday."
"The mindset influences much more than the strategies. The Play-Offs I have played and the direct promotion match against Alavés, I haven't seen very open games. The emotional state of the team and the players is going to greatly determine the outcome of the tie."
"The fans are going to be fundamental. Every time I have experienced this, they have been very important. Regardless of how the year has gone, I know the fans will be there on Sunday. I told the young players that they are going to experience an atmosphere they have never lived before. It has to be clear that we want the game."
"I convey calmness to them; age gives you some things but not others. I try to tell them to stay calm and enjoy it because these situations happen very few times in a player's career. For those of us who have fewer of these moments left to experience, unfortunately, we enjoy weeks like this a lot. We have to value what we are doing; it is difficult, and when we look back in fifteen or twenty years, we will remember it."
"The words I said about feeling a cold atmosphere, I think they were taken out of context. What I meant was that in other stages, I had experienced the end of the season with everything more heated. I know Sunday is going to be a cauldron, but I think the young players deserve for everything they have done so far to be appreciated."
"We have achieved 73 points, and I have been promoted with Las Palmas with fewer. We are arriving at a very optimal moment, and we will have an incredible atmosphere. That energy the fans will give us is what we will need to play a good game and win."
"The coach spoke with the captains the other day; he told us that we have more experience in these situations and that we should help the young players because of the experience we have. We have to go out and play football; there will be tough moments in the tie, and we are ready to support each other."
"I think compared to Málaga, we have experience; they have other virtues, and very good ones."
"The year with Alavés, we had a very stable season, just like this year. We are arriving well to the Play-Off; we have had some stumbles in recent weeks, but the end of the season is always complicated. It seems easy, but everyone is playing for a lot."
"Of course, I tell the fans to come and enjoy it; this is for them. What I ask, within the nervousness that will be there, is that they enjoy it. When we are united, the team transforms and becomes something else."
"We have young players and also veterans, which is very important. Having someone who can give you the calmness needed in these games helps a lot. What we have to do is make it clear on Sunday that we want to win the game, at home and with our fans. Sunday will be very key in the tie."
"I was taught that looking back is useless, not even to gain momentum. What has been experienced so far is worth nothing; now it's time to focus on the Play-Off."
"This is not the time to talk about whether Jonathan Viera will stay or not. The important thing is the team and what we are playing for. I haven't decided anything; I want to get through the Play-Off and help the team achieve the goal. We are at the point of being together and rowing in the same direction; the important thing is the team, and we are playing for a lot."
"We must not lose focus on other things; the focus is on winning on Sunday. We shouldn't talk about my continuity. How much have we talked about Jonathan Viera? We are in a Play-Off that we deserve, and we want to give the fans another promotion. The important thing now is the team."
"Jesé is already established; I said it at the beginning when there were people who didn't trust him. The homegrown players, the ones with talent, why wouldn't we trust our people if they have always given everything for the team, our people? Jesé wasn't coming from a good dynamic, but if you see someone with talent and determination... I trust him. Now it's easy to say he's good because he has ten goals. Hopefully, he will be the one to score the promotion goal; he deserves it, but it's time for him to push the young players. He will be very important in the Play-Off."
"I would dedicate the promotion to my family. We have done so many good things at UD, and it would be something very beautiful for me, very emotional. Celebrating it with my wife, my mother, my grandmother, my children... celebrating it at the Gran Canaria during this stage I am living would be like culminating my entire career at the club."
