Las Palmas miss out on a historic opportunity to win in the (3-3)

UD Las Palmas let a historic chance to win in the Santiago Bernabéu slip away. With just four minutes to go they were winning 1-3 with Madrid down to ten men and completely out of sorts, but once again Cristiano Ronaldo came to their rescue with two goals

Real Madrid impose great respect at the Bernabéu every time they run out onto the field of play. The league title is at stake which makes it even more frightening. Before the first minute was up Morata had a goal disallowed for offside. Then seven minutes later Isco made it 1-0 when possibly in an offside position. Las Palmas then made the most of great talent by Tana to draw the scores level within a minute with a superb goal.

Las Palmas came into this match with terrible stats: four defeats on the run. Quique Setién stated before the match that he would not change his playing style. Las Palmas’ playing style was pleasing on the eye, it was brave and at times put the home team’s defence under the cosh.

Jesé, who was having a great battle with Carvajal, was returning to the Santiago Bernabéu to face the club he grew up at, both as a person and as a player. His play is improving, as is his confidence, and physically he is able to take on any player for pace. Yet this improvement was not rewarded with a goal. The yellows kept their shape with the partnership of Roque Mesa and Jonathan Viera pulling the strings in midfield. Forl Madrid Kroos and Kovacevic took over the mantle of the game, replacing the missing Modric, but it was Bale and Isco who were causing the most damage.

In a fluke accident Pedro Bigas was injured as he clashed with team mate Dani Castellano (min. 25). Aythami Artiles took over his position with the task of keeping tight on Morata. Las Palmas (min. 30) nearly made it 1-2 on the break. A great move by Jesé with Boateng firing over the bar. Another header by Vicente Gómez was blocked by Sergio Ramos with Keylor Navas beaten. Las Palmas was close to providing a shock, and Zidane began to show signs of worry from the dugout. The game was flowing from end to end, which benefitted Setien’s team, who reached half time with a worthy 1-1 scoreline..

The second half started with the sending off of Bale for two yellow card offences. In the 55th minute Jonathan Viera scored from the penalty spot following handball by Sergio Ramos. Four minutes later Boateng added a third to make it 1-3 and silenced the Bernabéu. Madrid could not get anything right, Ronaldo was spending too much time far from Las Palmas area, and with one man down were being outplayed by Las Palmas, who were playing their best ever match in their history at the Bernabéu. It was not Madrid’s night as they poured forward creating scoring chances. Las Palmas broke away and Jesé could have put the match beyond the home team, and David Simón and Halilovic also had the chance to record a historical scoreline. Madrid reduced the arrears in the 85th minute with a penalty by Ronaldo. With just a minute left on the clock Cristiano rose highest to head his team’s third goal and make the final score three all.
