Las Palmas played the better football, they looked the more positive, but Cádiz came out on top due to two set pieces. The four-game winning streak came to an end for the islanders. Pepe Mel was sent off for protesting against the penalty which led to Cádiz’s second goal.

Pepe Mel put out a predictable starting eleven.  Kirian took the place of the absent Pedri, while Galarreta returned to midfield pivot role alongside Fabio, following his one game suspension. This was a tough game for Las Palmas. Cádiz, the league leaders, in the Ramón de Carranza stadium, is a hard place to pick up points. Las Palmas had all the possession. Cádiz sat back and waited for the chance to take advantage of a mistake and make a swift break.

Cádiz went ahead after offering very little, through a header by Fali (m. 27) from a corner. Mel’s side were unable to find the space in which to play the final pass and upset the home side’s solid defence. Patience was the name of the game.

In the 40th minute Alberto De la Bella had a good scoring chance, but his shot went straight into the grateful arms of Cifuentes. Just before half time, Martín Mantovani limped off injured and his place in the centre of defence was taken by Uruguayan Mauricio Lemos. The teams went in at half time with a slender lead for the home side.

Las Palmas played more positively in the second half and in a five minute spell caused problems for Cádiz on three occasions. Possession and chances were for Las Palmas (tonight playing in their red away kit). Cádiz preferred to sit back and wait. With Las Palmas pushing forward, a penalty was awarded to the home side following a foul by De la Bella which led to the sending off of Pepe Mel for protesting (m. 77). Alex Fernández scored from twelve yards to put his side 2-0 ahead in the LaLiga SmartBank. In the dying moments Salvi struck the right hand post defended by Josep.
