Las Palmas draw goalless in their first summer friendly (0-0)
The ball started rolling in Marbella with the first preseason friendly. UD Las Palmas played to a goalless draw (0-0) against Orlando Pirates in Thursday’s evening match. In this initial test, both teams had chances, but the goal never came in the warm Marbella evening.
Abou Bassinga was a standout in the first half. The Ivorian was a notable addition to the starting eleven chosen by head coach Luis García Fernández, playing at left-back—a role the coach wanted to assess him in. However, Bassinga couldn’t finish the first half, as he asked to be substituted due to injury just as he was finding rhythm in his play.
Las Palmas attempted to control the game through ball possession. But their opponents, showing surprising physical sharpness for this stage of preseason, pressed high and with numbers, making it difficult for the Gran Canarian side to build their attacks.
Orlando Pirates had the two best scoring chances in the first half, both through Dlamini. In the 20th minute, he took a wide free kick that hit the crossbar before going out. Then in the 31st, the South African attacker reached the box on a break and fired a low shot, but Dinko Horkas reacted well and tipped it out for a corner.
Las Palmas' best opportunity in the first half came from academy player Ale García in the 36th minute. He escaped his marker and managed a diagonal shot, but a defender's boot deflected it just in time to prevent it from beating goalkeeper Dlala.
In the second half, UD Las Palmas had more presence in the opponent’s half and their attacks became more dangerous. The key moment came around the hour mark when Marc Cardona chased down a loose ball and tried a lob from outside the area. Goalkeeper Chaine managed to stop the shot but was sent off for handling the ball outside the box.
For the final 30 minutes, Luis García Fernández’s side enjoyed a numerical advantage, but couldn’t convert it into a goal. The clearest chance fell to Enrique Clemente, who headed a corner towards goal, only for a South African defender to clear it at the last moment and preserve the goalless draw.
