The early goal by Atlético de Madrid scored by Correa (min. 3) left the home team and their fans shellshocked. Then just a minute later Carrasco made it 0-2. Two attacks and two goals in just five minutes put UD Las Palmas against the ropes, as they had hardly had time to get off the mark in their first home league match. Atlético showed themselves to be uncompromising during the whole evening, while their rivals seemed to lack concentration.

The home team's line-up featured a number of new faces. Lemos moved back into his natural position of centre back. Alongside was Hernán, back after injury, Momo was on the left hand side, while youth player Fabio was enjoying his debut. Atlético de Madrid just needed to pressure hard in order to be comfortable. Las Palmas tried to shake themselves from their nightmare start, but there was a lack of connection to be able to upset a mature and matter of fact team such as Atlético.

Las Palmas tried to play their way back into the match, even though they knew it was a tough challenge to play their way through the away team's area, against an aggresive team that threatened on the counter attack. All moves revolved around Jonathan Viera, who was looking to break through dribbling past defenders. As the minutes went by Márquez's team began to settle down and have a real go against Atlético. 0-2 against such tough opposition was a tough call for Las Palmas. The first half ended with a free kick by Lemos that flew narrowly over the bar.

Atlético de Madrid allowed Las Palmas to move the ball around in the second half. Thomas was making himself felt, while the home team aimed to get back into proceedings with some set plays. Las Palmas did pull a goal back in the 58th minute with a header by Argentinian Calleri.

Atlético, however, far from panicking, soon scored their third against home goalkeeper Chichizola, following a great shot by Koke from the edge of the box (min. 62). The away team rounded off their fine victory with a fourth goal, again the work of Koke with fifteen minutes left on the clock. Jonathan Viera wasted a penalty in the 80th minute, saved by Oblak. Thomas then added a final fifth goal for Atletico de Madrid.
