Las Palmas suffers their first defeat at the Estadio Gran Canaria (2-3) against Athletic

UD Las Palmas endured their first home defeat of the season at the Estadio Gran Canaria. The points flew back to Bilbao after Athletic Club secured a 2-3 victory on the island. Sandro Ramírez and Álex Muñoz reduced the deficit twice, but it wasn't enough to prevent the loss.

The match also marked the home debut of Portuguese forward Fábio Silva, who came on in the second half and showed some attacking promise during a period when the home team was trying to mount a comeback.

Luis Carrión's side struggled in the first half, which ended with Athletic leading 0-2 thanks to goals from Sancet and Nico Williams, demonstrating the visitors' efficiency and the hosts' difficulties.

Las Palmas had the first real chance to score, with Moleiro and Kirian forcing saves from keeper Arrizabalaga, including a close-range effort from the captain that was superbly stopped.

Shortly after, however, it was Athletic who struck first. A throw-in led to Iñaki Williams delivering a ball into the box, and Sancet capitalized to beat Cillessen for the 0-1.

The goal seemed to unsettle Las Palmas, allowing Athletic to take control and make it 0-2 on the half-hour mark through a Nico Williams strike.

Despite the significant deficit, there was still an hour left for a potential comeback. Las Palmas showed fighting spirit, with Kirian coming close to cutting the deficit in the 37th minute. After combining with Moleiro, he fired a shot past the keeper, only for defender Paredes to clear the ball off the line.

The match took a turn just before the hour mark when Athletic were reduced to ten men following Jauregizar’s red card for a foul on Sandro, who was through on goal.

Immediately after, Sandro fired home a brilliant shot to make it 1-2, giving Las Palmas hope heading into the final stages.

However, just as the home side was pressing hard, Athletic dealt a decisive blow, making it 1-3 through Paredes, who scored from close range after an Iñaki Williams assist.

Las Palmas kept pushing and pulled one back with a header from Álex Muñoz, assisted by Kirian, but their final efforts were in vain as Athletic held on to their lead and left the island with the victory.
