UD Las Palmas suffered another defeat this Saturday, once again at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, during the visit of CD Castellón (0-3). The yellows gave their all on the field in an attempt to counteract the high collective level of an opponent that remained threatening throughout the night and deservedly took the three points at stake.
The return of Juan Manuel Rodríguez as coach of UD Las Palmas brought some changes to the starting lineup of the yellow team. In that initial lineup was Abou Bassinga, the international from Burkina Faso, who for the first time this season took on this role in the Gran Canaria team.
The match began with an exchange of chances, with Jefté coming close to scoring twice while the scoreboard remained untouched. The first attempt ended in the net, but the referee disallowed the play due to an offside at the start. The subsequent shot was taken by the forward from the edge of the area, with the ball narrowly missing the post.
Castellón had shown itself to be a very dangerous opponent both before and after those opportunities, first hitting the crossbar with a shot from Maty Orozco and later scoring twice from set pieces, establishing a 0-2 lead that distanced the yellow team from their goal.
The two goals in the first half came from set pieces or strategic plays. Suero put the 0-1 on the scoreboard with a direct free kick that went over the wall and past goalkeeper Caro. Minutes later, his teammate Sienra, unmarked, headed in a corner kick taken from the left side of the visitors' attack.
These two setbacks, along with the injury to Iñaki González, complicated the entire game plan for the home team. Las Palmas showed resilience in the face of adversity and, despite the 0-2 scoreline, tried to close the gap with more heart than effective initiatives. Iván Jaime also came close with a shot from the edge of the area that went over the crossbar.
The situation worsened in the second half as the visiting team scored a third goal with a header from Pablo Santiago. The play began with a cross from his teammate Orozco, which hit the crossbar before the second and decisive action.
The match declined for Las Palmas, which, despite fighting until the 92nd minute, was unable to change its gameplay dynamics or the outcome of the score.
