Las Palmas ends 2023 with a last-minute defeat at San Mamés (1-0).

Football was cruel this Wednesday for UD Las Palmas in the last matchday of 2023. Garcia Pimienta's players lost 1-0 against Athletic, who scored their goal in the final attack. A fierce battle unfolded at San Mamés, with the yellow team showing a combative spirit, deploying both offensive actions and a determined defensive stance when necessary. However, only Unai Gómez's header made it to the scoresheet, seconds before the match concluded.

Garcia Pimienta managed the absences in midfield by forming an organizing triangle composed of Perrone, Loiodice - the captain - and Javi Muñoz. Athletic displayed high pressure from the start, making it tough for the Gran Canarian team to operate while proposing quick plays for their forwards.

The match appeared challenging for the visiting players, requiring utmost defensive concentration and swift retreats. The first real opportunity came for Iñaki Wiliams at 13 minutes, ending in a shot saved by Valles.

Las Palmas also initiated attacks in the opponent's half. One incident led to a debated penalty at 27 minutes when the referee pointed to the spot for a foul on Marvin Park by Paredes. The VAR intervened, and after 4 minutes, the decision was overturned.

Ten minutes later, another penalty was awarded in Las Palmas' area. Mika Mármol's contact with Guruzeta was signaled, and this time, Guruzeta took the penalty, which Valles saved.

The second half resumed with similar dynamics, yet Las Palmas had a stronger presence with the ball.

Despite Las Palmas playing assertively, Athletic pushed for an opening goal. Their chance came at 56 minutes, thwarted by Valles again.

The most significant opportunity for the visitors arrived through Sandro in the second half, but Unai Simón denied his shot towards the goal.

In the final stretch, Athletic pressured Las Palmas, and in a swift counterattack, Unai Gómez sealed the win for Athletic after a situation where Sandro claimed a foul (not given) against him.
