Las Palmas started out with an attacking 4-3-3 line-up, with Mauricio Lemos in the anchoring midfield position to support Jonathan Viera and Vicente Gómez. It was the tactical set up with which to counter Villarreal. The yellows were today kitted out in grey so as not to clash with the home team’s colours, and started the match in an unfortunate fashion, with the early injury to Oussama Tannane in the very first minute. His replacement was French forward Remy. The ex-Chelsea player upset the home team with his speed and dribbling skills, and created chances against their defence.

Las Palmas had difficulty in getting into the game and suffered in the first few minutes with continual imbalance, both in defence and in attack. Villarreal, without playing especially well, were able to pose a threat around the away goal defended by goalkeeper Chichizola and Las Palmas struggled to dig themselves out of the trenches.

The first half came to an end with a nil-nil scoreline, with the blame for the lack of goals on both goalkeepers. Mariano Barbosa was able to block two efforts, one of these a free kick by Jonathan Viera. Chichizola, had to be quick to keep out Bacca and Bakambu.

The disjointed and unconfident football by Las Palmas grew by the minute. Chances came and went, with nobody able to get a final touch, and thus the teams went in at half time scoreless. Neither Calleri, nor Jonathan Viera, nor Remy were able to show a cool head in front of goal.

The second half brought bad news for UD Las Palmas, with Villarreal’s breakthrough goal. Bakambu’s powerful shot was too hot for Chichizola to get to at his near post (min. 47). Going behind in matches is not good news right now for Las Palmas. Their playing style is too predictable, and it takes them ages to string together a meaningful attack. In the 63rd minute Bacca chipped the ball onto the crossbar. This was a warning of what was to come. Just a minute later, winger Mario Gaspar made it 2-0 for an ever more confident Villarreal side. The game was then over in a flash with the third goal, this time an own goal by Ximo Navarro (min. 66). With time already up the definitive fourth goal was scored, by Sansone.

This is UD Las Palmas’ fifth defeat in a row, and means they remain in a relegation spot for another week. Now the team turns its attention once again on the mainland with a cup tie and a visit next Thursday to Deportivo de La Coruña, in the Riazor stadium.
