UD Las Palmas couldn’t afford to slip up in Lugo, at a stadium that seemed the ideal place to dig themselves out of their rut. They were unable to do so, and their first objective, a playoff place, is now six points away. This despite Paco Herrera looking to give his side a fresh look with changes in certain positions, mainly on the wings. Álvaro Lemos played in front of David García on the right. Galarreta came back into the anchor role alongside David Timor. Nauzet Pérez was the replacement in goal for the injured Raúl Fernández.

The game started badly for the away side. A penalty conceded by Deivid  (min. 11) led to the first home goal. It was confidently stroked home by Canary-born striker Christian Herrera to Nauzet Pérez’s left. Las Palmas then took control of the game. Rubén Castro headed goalwards and Juan Carlos made a brilliant save. That was the first warning shot. Straight after Juan Cala pulled his side level following a corner (min. 24).

The game went from end to end. Las Palmas created danger on the right with crosses by Lemos. A free kick by Timor was scrambled away by the home goalkeeper. But in a counter attack at the other end, Christian Herrera put CD Lugo back ahead, as the game began to boil over. The half time whistle came with a slender lead for Alberto Monteagudo’s side.

A third goal by Lugo in the first minute of the second half ripped Las Palmas apart, and they once again looked like a side who were extremely hesitant in defence. The Canary side hit back however with a great header by Maikel Mesa following a cross by Álvaro Lemos (min. 54). Rubén Castro, just a few minutes later, sent another good cross by man of the match Lemos over the bar. A shot by Sergio Araujo (min. 61) came back of a post, meaning the match was very much alive. Escriche, just before being taken off, also hit the post defended by Nauzet Pérez (min. 70).

The game finished at a fast and furious pace and with plenty of chances, with Las Palmas crossing balls into the box and Lugo hitting them on the counter. But it was too much in the end for the away side, despite 5 minutes of time added on, as they conceded a late fourth goal, this time by Iriome.
