Quique Setién: "We made a valiant effort against Barcelona"

UD Las Palmas’ trainer said, following his team’s last home match of the season, which ended in defeat, that "We showed flashes of what the team has been capable of most of the season, I am leaving with no regrets and highly grateful".

"The fans’ applause filled me with satisfaction following such a poor run. They have rewarded the team’s efforts throughout the season, and at times we played some superb football, apart from the last two months".

"We have spoken on many occasions about things that have affected the team progressively. The games against Sevilla, Granada and Málaga pulled us back down from the top positions and our chance to challenge for Europe, which could perhaps be considered unreasonable expectations for the team in the end".

"We competed really well against Barcelona, who are at their strongest point in the season, but we have left signs of what our team has been capable of through the season".

"We have enjoyed ourselves immensely and have seen how the team has grown, based on a footballing style which is not usual in a developing team. I am leaving with the feeling I have done my job, while I apologise for the mistakes I may have made. I hope to leave good memories of my time here in Gran Canaria.

I am sure I could have done a lot of things differently, but there are certain aspects that are out of my control", said the emotional trainer. "Everything I have done has been to try and benefit the club and UD Las Palmas".

"I am leaving with no bitterness, and I am very grateful for what this team and this club have given me. They brought me out of unemployment and have enabled me to become a recognised football manager", he declared.
