Las Palmas lose out to Granada on Jesé’s debut (1-0)

UD Las Palmas soon got warmed up. This would seem normal, as they were immediately put under heavy pressure, which didn’t give them a moment to think or to move forward in possession. With just a tiny spark in the middle of the park UD Las Palmas began to show little flashes of their passing game but failed to threaten Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa. The first chance in the 10th minute was a shot by Tana that went wide. With some thundering attacks Granada scored their first goal thanks to a screaming volley by Andreas Pereira (min. 16). Straight after, David Simón came on to replace the injured Michel Macedo.

Granada looked to hang on following defeats by Valencia, Leganés and Sporting de Gijón, and they played bravely as they knew they could not let three points slip away. Lucas Alcaraz’s men played hard and pressured their opponents high up the pitch, with a direct style against a team that only reacted when they had the ball at their feet. When Granada didn’t have the ball they suffered as many other team do when up against the yellows.

Without thinking about how close they were to European footbal, Las Palmas came into the game at Los Cármenes with the tag of revelation team. However, despite some good football they have not been rewarded with many victories this season at all; one, in the very first game of the season in Valencia (2-4) and another in the Spanish Cup (2-3) in the Vicente Calderón in Madrid. On three consecutive occasions Las Palmas could have equalized; Bigas headed wide, Tana mishit a right foot shot and an attempted overhead kick by Boateng that went just past the crossbar. Just before half time, a free kick by Jonathan Viera was turned round the post for a corner by a hesitant Ochoa.

Las Palmas pushed hard in the second half and forced Granada into trying not to lose the ball.  A superb save by Ochoa kept Las Palmas out after a hard drive by Montoro. The game went from end to end as Granada tried to break quickly. In another attack the yellows came close once more, with another shot by Bigas that shaved the post. In the 66th minute, Jesé made his debut with the yellows, replacing Vicente Gómez. Just two minutes later, the forward somehow managed to misconnect with the goal at his mercy, wasting a fine chance. Another great through ball by Jonathan Viera to the debutant ended in the midriff of the home goalkeeper. Las Palmas were getting desperate as they could see another away game slipping away from them. Setién, just four minutes from time and as a last ditch attempt, brought on Halilovic. In time added on Ochoa made another great save from Tana and Las Palmas recorded another defeat away from the Estadio Gran Canaria.
