UD Las Palmas bid farewell to their fans for the season, having avoided the threat of relegation, and attempting to put up a good show against the almighty FC Barcelona, one of the strongest teams in the world, who came to Gran Canaria in search of vital points to keep their hopes alive of retaining their league title, making an already strong team a powerful threat indeed.

A sunny afternoon greeted the two teams, and was just perfect for some good quality football, with a festive atmosphere in the stadium. The game started with alternatives for both teams, although Barcelona were always a threat whenever they got around the penalty area defended by home keeper Javi Varas. A through ball from Messi to Luis Suárez was the first warning shot for the home team.

Soon after Jesé burst through following a fine delivery by Viera but was cut down by away defender Digné. Despite calls for a red card by the home players the referee produced a yellow card, while the resulting free kick came to nothing. Las Palmas faced up well to a heavy weight opponent for the first fifteen minutes or so, and the game was quite even in these early stages.

Jesé tried to burst forward down the right in the 18th minute, but his cross eluded everybody, as UD Las Palmas looked quite good on the ball. The game was then stopped temporarily following a clash between Jonathan Viera and Digne.

In the 24th minute a counter attack led by Luis Suárez was neatly finished by Neymar, (0-1), as Barcelona used their attacking prowess to go ahead. Then just three minutes later Luis Suárez made it 0-2 with another counter attack, making it an uphill battle for the home team. With two attacking flashes the away team had suddenly put themselves almost out of reach, showing just why they are one of the finest attacking teams on the planet.

UD Las Palmas tried to hit back following these two setbacks, as the first half continued with Luis Enrique’s men producing some fast flowing attacking football. Half time was reached with no further score.

Las Palmas attempted to get back into the match in the second half, a tough proposition but not impossible. They amassed around Ter Steguen’s penalty area in the first few minutes of the second half, with a shot by Prince and a direct free kick by Jesé, which went over the bar. Viera had another chance to put the away goal under pressure. At the other end Leo Messi was looking to feature more in the match, and almost grabbed his team’s third.

The half carried on in this fashion until Digne was replaced by André Gomes. Soon after Jesé almost had the ball in the net, but Ter Stegen managed to block his effort, this representing the best chance so far in the match for UD Las Palmas. Then a fine piece of play down the right by Prince Boateng was finished off by Pedro Bigas to make the scores 1-2 and give UD just an outside chance. But once again Neymar stepped in to make the scores 1-3 and 1-4 in a few short minutes, rounding off his hat trick and showing great power in the process.

Little was left in the game for UD Las Palmas, who nevertheless tried valiantly to get back into proceedings and please their home fans, but found themselves up against an uncompromising away team who didn’t give an inch as they continued to wager their league title battle with rivals Real Madrid.
